How To Hook Up Speakers To A Monitor

OK, I recently got a used powered mixer, a Peavey XR 600 B for my church band. We needed it for practice and maybe the occasional small gig. I tried it out this weekend and I have a question about how to hook it up.This weekend, the hookup was simple because I only had two mains, so I just connected a 1/4 inch speaker cable from each of the speaker outputs on the back of the mixer to each speaker. However, on the front, the mixer has outputs for mains and monitors and separate volume switches for monitors and mains. When playing around with the connections, I tried to connect the speakers to the main output and no sound came out. Is this because I would have to have an amplifier between the output and the speakers?? I thought I had a powered mixer, therefore, didn't need another amplifier. How would I hook it up if I want to use mains and monitors and have separate volume controls?Suggestions??

The speakers outs are what you use.OK, so the speaker outs don't appear to be labelled as mains or monitors, so how do I control the volume individually of my mains and monitors??I have to look up pics of the back, but the master should be your 'house' control. You should be able to use the master out to drive a couple of powered speakers in mono, as well as the monitor out. If you have 2 quarter inch jacks in the back, I'd assume they are for the main speakers. That's an old piece of equipment. I haven't used one of those since High School, paired with Vocal Masters as speakers.ETA: The master out mixes the individual masters on each channel, as well as the monitor out doing the same. Yes, you would need either another amp or powered speakers for the front outs. OK, I recently got a used powered mixer, a Peavey XR 600 B for my church band. How To Hook Up Speakers

I'd suggest looking into powered speakers (JBL, Mackie, and QSC have some nice ones) because you can use them as monitor wedges, and would be even better for mains. Those would use the front panel outs. BTW, we did a showcase for a couple of bands that were promoted by a local radio station (the bands were Red-Line Chemistry and Evans Blue), and the local radio audio guy had one of those.

We wanted a feed to send through the house while the stage was dark, and my buddy who was mixing was confused on where to patch from the Peavey. He is younger than I am so I guess this was ancient to him, because we use this digital desk to mix with:We would up patching in the radio stations boom box into the desk. Got in here a little late, but drummer is right on the money. The 'speaker' jacks on the back are powered. Anything coming from the front output jacks is line level and will need an additional amp (or powered speakers). However, if you had four unpowered speakers you could chain two together off of one speaker jack to use as monitors, and two off the other jack to use as mains. However, you could not control the volume seperately this wayYou can download the manual for it here: Thanks for the help.
