If you’re familiar with Paradox strategy games like Europa Universalis IV, Hearts of Iron III, and Victoria II, you either love ’em or hate ’em. The learning curve is steep and there are no glamorous cinematics to watch. The games put your imagination to work as you dabble in the complicated affair of ruling.Once you’ve got the hang of all the planning and payoff, Paradox games can become addicting. It’s why fans keep asking for and buying the many DLCs and expansions. The promising indie RPG Within the Cosmos is drawing from some significant sources of inspiration as it heads towards its August 1 release date.Speaking to OnlySP, developer Francois Debois mentioned that Star Trek has been a central influence on the project: “ I’d say the biggest inspiration behind it all has been Star Trek, I think the story and lore will reflect that to some degree.”Alongside the classic sci-fi series, Debois listed a number of RPGs, immersive sims, and FPS games that have inspired him during the development process. “ I love the FPS RPG genre, so Deus Ex was a massive inspiration, as was Fallout: New Vegas. Those are two top tier FPS RPG games that I absolutely love.
Space-based games have had an influence as well, such as Halo and Mass Effect. They helped shape the game in one way or another,” he said.In the full interview, Debois discusses a wide array of topics, including specifics of the gameplay and where Within the Cosmos sits on the spectrum between linear and open-world RPGs. That discussion will be available tomorrow. In the meantime, be sure to bookmark OnlySP and follow us on, and for all the latest from the world of single-player gaming.
